This friday in the Lecture Hall the Cactus Shadows Improv Team "The Jokers" will be performing.

What is Improv?

Improv (short for improvisation) is a form of live, unscripted theater, comedy, or music where performers create scenes, characters, and dialogue in the moment. It is built on collaboration, where performers rely on each other to build a scene from scratch, often starting with a suggestion from the audience.

Core Principles of Improv

  • "Yes, And": The foundational rule. Performers accept the reality presented by their partner ("Yes") and add new information to it ("And").

  • Active Listening: Paying close attention to the partner to respond authentically rather than planning ahead.

  • No Blocking: Avoiding the denial of an offer or idea provided by another player.

  • Stay in the Moment: Focusing on the present, rather than overthinking the future or past of the scene.

Types of Improv

  • Short-Form: Fast-paced, game-driven scenes, often with specific rules or challenges (similar to Whose Line Is It Anyway?).

  • Long-Form: Longer, more complex performances that focus on developing characters, relationships, and storylines, such as "The Harold".

History and Origins

  • Origins: Rooted in the 16th–18th century Italian Commedia dell'Arte.

  • Modern Era: Developed in the 1950s at the University of Chicago by Viola Spolin, Keith Johnstone, and Del Close, leading to famous troupes like Second City and iO.

Benefits of Improv

  • Personal Growth: Boosts confidence, creativity, and adaptability.

  • Professional Skills: Enhances teamwork, listening, and communication, often used in corporate training.

  • Mental Well-being: Encourages presence, reduces anxiety, and helps with social skills.

Improv vs. Other Comedy

  • Sketch Comedy: Written, rehearsed, and polished before performance (e.g., Saturday Night Live).

  • Stand-Up: A solo, pre-written, or planned routine.
